Punta Cana Airport (PUJ): Arrivals, E-Ticket and Transfers

·18 mins
Table of Contents

Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) is the main arrival point for most visitors flying into the Punta Cana and Bávaro resort area. The flight is only one part of the trip. You also need to know which terminal your airline uses, complete the Dominican Republic’s free E-Ticket, collect your luggage and find a reliable way to reach the actual entrance of your hotel or rental.

Most arrival-day confusion comes down to three practical details: where you are staying, which terminal you will exit and where your driver will wait. Getting those answers before departure makes the trip from baggage claim to your accommodation much easier.

Below you’ll find the steps from landing to the public arrivals hall, transport options for different types of trips and a departure checklist. Terminal assignments and pickup arrangements can change, so your airline’s instructions and the airport’s latest information take precedence.

Punta Cana Airport essentials at a glance
#

Question Practical answer
Airport code PUJ, Punta Cana International Airport
Main passenger terminals Terminal A and Terminal B; check your airline’s current assignment
Entry and exit form Dominican Republic E-Ticket, completed online at no charge
After landing Immigration, baggage collection, customs and the public arrivals area
On-site transportation Authorized airport taxis and rental-car companies; other pickup arrangements depend on the operator
Resort shuttles Not universal. Some hotels offer them, but most reservations should be checked individually
Pickup detail that matters most Flight number, terminal, arrival date, passenger count and the hotel or rental’s full address

Do not confuse Punta Cana Airport with a fixed pickup point for every hotel in the region. Cap Cana, central Bávaro, Uvero Alto and inland Punta Cana have different driving approaches. Even two hotels advertising the same beach can use entrances on very different roads.

Before you fly: terminal, E-Ticket and travel documents
#

Before leaving for the airport, you can resolve the three details that cause the most avoidable arrival problems: the departure or arrival terminal, the electronic form and the exact location where you will stay.

Check the airline and terminal, not an old travel blog
#

PUJ operates Terminal A and Terminal B. The airport publishes terminal information and maps, but a terminal used by one airline today should not be treated as a permanent assignment for every future flight. Confirm the terminal with your airline’s booking information, flight details or check-in notice.

Knowing the terminal is useful for much more than finding a gate. It tells a pre-booked driver where to meet you, helps you locate the correct rental-car desk and avoids sending another person to the wrong arrivals area.

If your inbound flight and outbound flight use different terminals, plan each separately. A return pickup should be based on the departure terminal for that specific flight, not whichever entrance you remember from arrival day.

Complete the free Dominican Republic E-Ticket
#

The Dominican Republic’s E-Ticket is a free, mandatory electronic arrival and departure form for passengers on commercial flights. It collects personal information, flight details, accommodation information and relevant customs declarations.

Use the official E-Ticket portal, linked by the Dominican Republic’s immigration authority. The standard form is free. You can complete it as soon as you have your flight details, even months in advance; there is no requirement to wait until the last 72 hours. Complete it before reaching your airline’s check-in counter and keep the confirmation available.

Have the following information ready:

  • Passport details and your flight number.
  • A working email address and travel dates.
  • Your accommodation’s full address, ideally including the development, municipality or neighborhood and property name.
  • Details for the travelers included on the form, as applicable to the government’s family/group process.
  • Any customs information the form requests for your situation.

Save the generated confirmation or QR code offline. You should not need airport Wi-Fi to retrieve it. Keep access to the confirmation on your return journey as well, because the exit declaration is a separate travel step.

The E-Ticket is not a visa or a guarantee of admission. Passport validity, visa requirements and any other conditions depend on your nationality and travel circumstances; confirm those independently with official authorities before departure.

Record the real destination address
#

A hotel name alone is often sufficient for an experienced transfer company, but it is not the best information to provide when arranging a driver or completing official travel details. Collect the full address and verify that it belongs to the property you actually booked.

For a villa, ask the host for the development name, building or lot information, a map pin and gate instructions. For a large resort, note the property’s official name and main guest entrance. Do not use a nearby restaurant or beach as a substitute unless your provider specifically tells you to meet there.

If you are still choosing between areas, the Where to Stay in Punta Cana guide explains which resort districts differ in atmosphere and everyday convenience.

What happens after your flight lands at PUJ?
#

The exact order of desks and corridors depends on your terminal and current airport operations, but international arrivals typically follow a familiar sequence.

From aircraft to public arrivals
#

  1. Follow arrivals and immigration signs. Keep your passport and any requested digital travel confirmation accessible. Airport staff and signs take priority over third-party walkthroughs.
  2. Complete the immigration process. Travelers may be directed to different counters or electronic gates according to eligibility and the arrangements operating that day.
  3. Collect checked baggage. Check the belt assigned to your flight. If an item is missing or damaged, report it to the airline or its baggage-handling representative before leaving the secure baggage area.
  4. Complete customs procedures as directed. The E-Ticket includes customs-related information, but follow any further instructions from customs personnel.
  5. Continue to the public arrivals area. Only then look for the agreed driver, authorized taxi operation or rental-car instructions for your terminal.

Agree on a meeting point outside the controlled baggage area and a contact method for delays. A driver waiting in public arrivals cannot usually come to the baggage carousel to find you.

If the flight is delayed or your bags take longer
#

Send a message to your transfer provider when you learn of a material delay. If the service promises flight tracking, confirm which flight number it is tracking and how waiting time is handled. Do not assume that every booking automatically includes an unlimited grace period.

When traveling as a family or with several checked bags, allow for a variable interval between touchdown and actually exiting the terminal. Immigration and baggage lines depend on the flight, terminal staffing and simultaneous arrivals. A fixed arrival-to-curbside estimate is rarely reliable enough to use as a guarantee.

If a bag does not appear, work with your airline’s baggage desk to establish a reference for the claim. A driver cannot fix a missing-baggage report later, and leaving the controlled area without reporting the issue can complicate follow-up.

Choosing ground transport from Punta Cana Airport
#

The airport’s official transportation information lists authorized taxis and on-site rental-car services, along with public transport and rideshare options. Private and shared transfers are also widely offered by third-party operators. These are different products, so compare how each works rather than looking only at a headline price.

Option What you are arranging Most useful when What to confirm
Pre-booked private transfer A driver and vehicle reserved for your party Family arrivals, several bags, late flights or villa check-ins Flight tracking, meeting point, luggage capacity and waiting policy
Authorized airport taxi A ride arranged through an authorized taxi provider Travelers who want to arrange transport after landing Destination, total fare, payment method and vehicle size
Shared shuttle or transfer A reserved seat or shared vehicle with scheduled or grouped stops Solo travelers or couples who prioritize price over directness Departure window, other hotel stops and last-service time
App-based ride A pickup coordinated through a rideshare app where available Travelers comfortable following live pickup instructions Exact terminal pickup zone and whether the app can confirm a driver
Rental car Your own vehicle from an airport rental agency Multi-stop trips and travelers planning to drive throughout the stay Insurance, deposit, fuel, pickup desk, driver documents and resort parking
Public transportation A separate bus or local transport journey Flexible travelers with limited luggage and realistic transfer plans Actual departure point, connections and current service schedule

For a direct resort trip, the simplest comparison is often a pre-booked private transfer versus an authorized airport taxi. Shared services can cost less per person but may add waiting time and stops; compare the total cost for your party as well as convenience.

Pre-booked private transfer: the simplest handoff
#

A private transfer generally works best when you want the ground transportation decided before the flight. Your provider should know the arrival date, airline, flight number, terminal and destination. It should also tell you exactly how to identify the driver after you pass into the public arrivals area.

Ask what the quoted rate covers. Per vehicle and per person can produce very different totals for a family. Clarify whether airport waiting, child seats, highway charges or an extra suitcase changes the price. Do not assume that a driver automatically carries every kind of child seat or oversized item.

For a villa, give the driver the actual gated-community entrance and your host’s check-in instructions. For a large all-inclusive property, confirm the correct guest lobby, because a complex can have more than one property name, reception area or gate.

A private transfer is not necessarily faster than every other type of vehicle on the road. Its advantage is usually less decision-making after arrival and fewer intermediate stops.

Authorized airport taxi: decide after landing
#

PUJ identifies authorized taxi groups on its transportation page, including SIUTRATURAL, BERON TAXI and ASOTATUPAL. Arranging a taxi after arrival can suit travelers who prefer flexibility and do not need a pre-assigned driver.

Confirm the complete fare before the trip begins, together with currency, acceptable payment methods and whether the quote covers your whole party. An airport taxi rate depends on the actual destination; the marketing term Punta Cana alone is not a precise address.

When there are multiple passengers, confirm the luggage will fit in one vehicle. A family with two strollers, several checked suitcases and carry-ons may need a different vehicle from a couple with backpacks. The same point applies to a group planning to continue directly to a private rental.

Use an official taxi desk or recognized authorized operator rather than accepting a vague unsolicited offer whose provider and fare cannot be verified.

Shared shuttle: compare the route, not just the price
#

A shared transfer can work for travelers who are flexible about waiting and additional hotel stops. It may also be less attractive if your lodging is at the end of a multi-property route or if the shuttle requires you to reach a separate pickup point.

Before booking, find out whether you are buying a seat in a shared vehicle, a service with an assigned departure window or a private shuttle advertised under a similar name. Ask whether the operator serves your exact property and whether a late inbound flight changes the arrangement.

For larger families, multiply the per-person fare before concluding the shared service is less expensive than a private vehicle. Include the inconvenience of extra stops and the ability to accommodate luggage in the comparison.

Rideshare pickup: follow the current airport instructions
#

The airport’s transportation page mentions Uber X and Uber Select, but airport pickup locations and app availability can be subject to local operational changes. At the time of our October 2026 review, the airport’s public information did not give a dependable, permanent curbside pickup point for every rideshare request.

Check the latest instructions inside the app and on airport signs after landing. Match the plate number, driver and vehicle with the booked ride. Do not assume the app will accept a pickup directly outside any terminal door or that app-based transport will always be cheaper than an authorized taxi.

If the app does not display a clear legal pickup area or an available driver, use the airport’s official transportation information instead of wandering around the exterior roads with luggage.

Rental cars: useful for a trip beyond one resort
#

On-site rental-car agencies are listed by the airport, with counters associated with Terminal A, Terminal B or both. Companies and desk locations may change, so verify your booking’s exact pickup terminal and closing hours. The presence of a brand at PUJ does not guarantee that every car category is available without a reservation.

Read the full rental agreement, especially insurance coverage, the damage deductible, security deposit, fuel policy and additional-driver fees. Check where the vehicle must be returned and whether the rental desk will be open.

A car is most useful when you intend to make several independent journeys: visiting multiple beaches, moving between different accommodation areas or taking day trips with a flexible schedule. If you plan to stay inside one all-inclusive resort most of the week, the cost and logistics of a parked rental vehicle may offer little benefit.

Public buses: do not confuse the airport with a town bus station
#

PUJ lists local public-transport information, but it is not sensible to assume there is a direct bus from the arrivals hall to every hotel, villa or resort entrance. A route suitable for a local resident may require a connection, different stop or additional taxi leg.

The airport website, for example, describes departures to Santo Domingo from a station in Verón, not from a seat guaranteed outside either PUJ terminal. Treat that as a different journey requiring its own transfer to the departure point, timetable check and ticket arrangements.

If you arrive at night, have heavy luggage or are traveling with small children, investigate the complete door-to-door journey before choosing buses solely because they appear cheaper on a map.

The destination matters more than the airport distance label
#

The wider Punta Cana area is not one compact beachfront strip. Airport transfers should be planned around the property’s actual road entrance.

Destination area What your driver needs to know What travelers sometimes overlook
Cap Cana Resort, villa compound or marina entrance and any gate authorization Different properties inside the community may use separate routes
Punta Cana Village and nearby airport-side hotels Specific hotel or street address Airport proximity does not automatically mean a complimentary shuttle
Bávaro and Los Corales / El Cortecito Accommodation entrance, street and any neighborhood gate Beach names do not identify the correct driving entrance
Arena Gorda resort corridor Full resort name, lobby or main property entrance Large resorts can be farther from the central Bávaro restaurant pockets
Uvero Alto Exact resort or villa location and arrival instructions It is a separate northern resort corridor, not central Bávaro

Road travel varies with traffic, weather and the entrance your driver uses. Request a current estimate for your exact property, rather than relying on a single airport-to-Punta-Cana driving time.

For the different atmosphere and walkability of Bávaro’s neighborhoods, read our Bávaro area guide. Our Cap Cana vs Bávaro comparison explains why two similarly priced hotels may lead to very different transportation plans. For northern-coast accommodation, the Uvero Alto resorts and beach-access guide covers the location trade-offs.

A pickup checklist worth sending to your driver
#

Good instructions are short, concrete and easy to understand after a delayed flight. Send the essential details in one message before traveling rather than asking the driver to piece them together from several screenshots.

  • Your full name as shown on the transfer reservation.
  • Arrival date, flight number and airline, including any relevant change of flight.
  • Terminal A or B, confirmed from the airline’s current information.
  • Passenger and luggage count, especially car seats, strollers, surfboards or larger suitcases.
  • Destination name plus exact address or map pin, including villa gate information where necessary.
  • Agreed meeting spot, identifying sign, company or driver name.
  • Contact method and waiting policy if flight or baggage processing is delayed.

Before boarding your flight, save the booking confirmation, driver contact details and relevant map information offline. Mobile reception and messaging applications may not work the instant you leave the aircraft.

For villa arrivals, ask the host whether a driver needs to be registered at a security gate. It is a small coordination detail that can prevent an unnecessary stop outside the neighborhood.

Departing from Punta Cana Airport
#

Your departure involves many of the same planning decisions as arrival, but in reverse. The greatest avoidable mistake is telling the return driver to take you to the arrivals entrance or to the terminal you used when you first landed.

Verify the departure terminal and airline check-in instructions for your specific flight. Confirm the agreed hotel pickup time with your transfer provider, considering check-out procedures, the drive, check-in and security. Follow your airline’s recommended airport arrival window rather than relying on a universal time estimate for every international flight.

Complete the Dominican Republic E-Ticket exit declaration as required for your trip. Keep the confirmation accessible when checking in. Recheck passport and visa requirements if your journey includes a connection through another country.

When collecting your luggage from the hotel, make sure you have any travel documents and medicines you need in carry-on baggage. If you have fragile or unusual items, review your airline’s baggage terms; airport transport providers and airlines have different responsibilities.

On departure day, use the airport’s current signs and your airline’s directions if they differ from an older terminal map.

Traveling with children or needing accessibility assistance
#

Punta Cana Airport publishes information about priority lines for families with children aged 0–3, people with reduced mobility and passengers with special needs. It also describes accessible ramps, reserved seating and support for non-visible disabilities through the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program.

Those services may make the terminal easier to navigate, but they do not mean every family can skip every queue automatically. Follow staff directions and ask what eligibility and assistance arrangements apply to the particular passenger.

If you need wheelchair service, specialized assistance or support transferring between aircraft and terminal, notify your airline in advance and review the airport’s published accessibility guidance. Do not wait until the curbside pickup to discover that the vehicle cannot accommodate the traveler’s mobility equipment.

For children, plan the journey around documents, drinks, restrooms, a change of clothes and the possibility of a longer wait for baggage. The airport identifies some children’s recreation areas in the terminals; their locations and availability depend on the terminal and current operations.

When booking transport for a family, confirm child seats and usable luggage space in advance. A transfer vehicle with enough seats for the passengers may still lack room for two strollers and several suitcases. You should also confirm whether the driver supplies an age-appropriate seat or expects you to bring one.

Frequently asked questions about PUJ arrivals
#

These quick answers cover the details travelers most often need to resolve before they land or arrange their return journey.

Is the Dominican Republic E-Ticket really free?
#

Yes. The official immigration service states that submitting the standard E-Ticket is free, and the tourism ministry directs travelers to the official online form. If a website asks for a processing fee, check the domain before entering personal data.

Can I find a taxi without booking a transfer?
#

The airport lists authorized taxi services at PUJ. You can plan to arrange a taxi on arrival, but confirm the fare, vehicle and payment terms before departure. Booking ahead may still be preferable for larger groups or late-night arrivals.

Is there a free shuttle to every Punta Cana resort?
#

No. Do not assume a shuttle is included because a hotel offers airport transportation as a separately bookable service. The airport’s own website mentions a complimentary shuttle for eligible Four Points by Sheraton Puntacana Village guests; that is a property-specific arrangement, not an airport-wide service.

Does the airport arrival terminal determine my return terminal?
#

Not necessarily. Verify the operating airline and terminal for each flight. Save the departure details separately in your transport booking, especially if your itinerary contains connections or a different airline on the return trip.

Do I need to know whether my hotel is in Bávaro or Cap Cana?
#

Yes, at least well enough to provide its full address. These locations can use different roads and gates, and the information affects your quote and pickup instructions. The Punta Cana Hotels guide and Punta Cana Resorts overview can help when you are still deciding on accommodation.

A smoother first hour starts before takeoff
#

For a comfortable arrival at PUJ, the essentials are straightforward: complete your free E-Ticket, verify Terminal A or B, save your hotel’s full address and choose a transportation arrangement with a clear meeting point. Then leave time for immigration, luggage and customs before expecting to see your driver.

The best airport transfer is not automatically the cheapest or the most elaborate. It is the option that fits your group size, luggage, arrival time and destination, with terms you can understand before you land.
